Characteristics:<\/span><\/p>\n

Red Gurnard (Minamihoubou) is distributed in the western Pacific and Indian Ocean from New Zealand and southern Australia to South Africa. It is often found at depths shallower than 200 m. It closely resembles Spiny red gurnard (Houbou), but the inner surface of the pectoral fin is green with large black spots and small white spots.<\/span><\/p>\n

The back is pinkish almost red, sometimes brownish. The abdomen is white. The average length of the body is about 30~50 cm and the maximum is about 60 cm.<\/span><\/p>\n

Minamihoubou are exported to Japan in large numbers and are a familiar fish to the Japanese. Like other white-fleshed fish, it can be used in a wide range of dishes, from sashimi to grilled, simmered, nabe (hot pot dish), meuniere, and others.<\/span><\/p>\n
