Characteristics:

Big-eyed flathead (Megochi) is distributed in southern Japan, the East China Sea, and the Yellow Sea. It inhabits sandy or sandy-muddy bottoms in coastal and inner bays shallower than 100 m in depth. The body length is 10~20 cm. Its body is longitudinally flattened and its body color is blackish brown.

Megochi is prized in Tokyo as a traditional Edomae tempura-dane. It is also used as an ingredient in fish paste products. Since it is watery, it requires a certain amount of effort to make nigiri sushi.
