There are 13 species of managatsuo in the world, and three species are distributed in the waters around Japan: Harvestfish (Managatsuo), Korean pomfret (Kouraimanagatsuo), and Chinese pomfret (Shinamanagatsuo). They are very similar and are all distributed as Managatsuo. It is difficult to tell them apart when they are filleted. In China and Taiwan, fish of the genus Managatsuo are important as food fish.

Kouraimanagatsuo is a tasty fish used in various side dishes, and because it is smaller than Managatsuo, it is sold at a lower price.
