Characteristics:

Northern whiting (Motogisu) is distributed in the Indo-Pacific Ocean from South Africa in the west to Japan and Indonesia in the east. Motogisu are closely related to the small-scale whiting (Aogisu) and are similar in morphology. The body is long and slender with large eyes. The ventral side is white and the dorsal side is slightly bluish. The body usually has silvery longitudinal stripes. Its total length reaches 30 cm.

Motogisu is suitable for tempura, salted and grilled dishes, vinegared dishes, and soups. It is sometimes used as a substitute for Japanese whiting (Shirogisu) in conveyor-belt sushi.
