Characteristics:

Emperor fish (Fuefukidai) are distributed from Wakayama south to Taiwan. It inhabits coastal reefs. Its body shape is similar to that of the sea bream family of fishes, but the mouthparts protrude. The body color is gray-green with dark transverse stripes, and the mouth is light red.

The flesh is clear and white, with no peculiarity, light and odorless. It has little dark red meat (chiai) and its color is light. It can be enjoyed as sashimi or in nigiri sushi. However, this fish is rarely found in supermarkets in the Kanto region. Nakedhead (Meichidai) and spangled emperor (Hamafuefuki) are also in the same family.
