Characteristics:

Lesser spangled emperor (Hamafuefukidai) is distributed south of Chiba Prefecture and in the Indo-West Pacific region. It inhabits shallow-water reefs, coral reefs, lagoon, and mangrove zones from near shore to depths of around 75 m. It is 30 to 50 cm in length and can reach up to 1 m in length.

As a sushi topping, it is an alternative to Hirame in southern Japan. It has a strong texture and oozes umami when chewed. It has a pleasant aftertaste and is an excellent white fish.
