Mangrove red snapper (Gomafuedai)

Gomafuedai is distributed in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. In Japan, it can be found in the southern part of Honshu Island and southwards. It inhabits coastal reefs and coral reefs. Its body is long and oval-shaped, and it is flattened on the sides. Adult fish grow to a length of about 70 cm.

Gomafuedai is a white fish with dark red meat (Chiai). Many of the species in the snapper family are delicious, and they are used in carpaccio, grilled with salt, and simmered dishes. Sashimi is also good, and it also goes well with vinegared rice. There have been reports of ciguatera poisoning in large individuals and those from tropical regions, so caution is required when using them for food.
