Pale ruby snapper (Ookuchihamadai) is distributed from the Izu Islands, the Tokara Islands, the Ryukyu Islands south of the Okinawa Islands, and from Reunion Island to Samoa. It inhabits depths of 90 to 360 meters.
Body length ranges from 70 to 100 cm. It can be distinguished from the related species Hamadai by the position of the rear end of the upper jaw, which is located further back than the center of the eye, and by its less elongated caudal fin compared to Hamadai.
This fish is delicious when prepared with the skin on, so we recommend sashimi that highlights the skin, butter-grilled, salt-grilled, or herb-grilled preparations.
