Feature:
Red dragonet (Beniteguri) is distributed from the Pacific coast of southern Japan to the East China Sea and northern South China Sea. It inhabits the marginal zone of the continental shelf.
As its name suggests, it is characterized by its vermilion body color, and the second dorsal fin has a yellow or peach-colored pattern that varies from species to species. Total length is 25 cm.
Beniteguri is a member of the same family as Richardson’s dragonet (Nezumigochi), which is used for tempura. It is delicious as sashimi, grilled with salt, and especially as dried fish. It has a light white flesh with no peculiarities. It is also good to make nigiri sushi with the skin on, as the fat in the skin gives the meat a much more delicious taste. However, there are no large catches, so it is consumed only in its local area.
