Characteristics:

Unicorn leatherjacket (Usubahagi) is distributed in warm waters south of Sagami Bay and throughout the world. It is found in sandy muddy areas along the coast and around reefs. Body length is 40~50 cm.

The body color is pale on the ventral surface, but has complex light grayish-brown stripes throughout, and small dark brown spots scattered on the dorsal surface.

It is often said that the fish of the Monacanthidae family are Filefish (Kawahagi), Black scraper (Umazurahagi), and Unicorn leatherjacket (Usubahagi) in order of taste. However, fresh Usubahagi is no less tasty than Kawahagi or Umazurahagi.

Usubahagi are less commonly available in the market than Kawahagi and Umazurahagi, and they are larger. This means that its market value is not high.
