Characteristics:

Oblong rockfish (Takenokomebaru) is distributed from southern Hokkaido to Kyushu and the south of the Korean Peninsula. It inhabits shallow-water reef areas with seaweed. It is a large species of mebaru with an elongated body shape. Its body length is about 30 cm, reaching a maximum of 40 cm. Its body is a yellowish-dark-gray color with scattered dark-brown spots.

The taste is light and ideal for simmered dishes or miso soup. The skin is tough, but the flesh is tender, making it delicious as sashimi. Since it is rarely found in the market, it is often priced at a rather high level. However, small ones are inexpensive.
