Characteristics:

Spot eye flathead (Wanigochi) is distributed in the Pacific Ocean south of the Kii Peninsula, the Sea of Japan south of Wakasa Bay, the East China Sea, and the South China Sea. It inhabits sandy or sandy-muddy bottoms from shallow coastal waters to a depth of nearly 100 meters. The body length is 20~50 cm. The front part of the body is longitudinally flattened. The head has numerous spines. Its body color is grayish brown with several dark brown saddle-like bands on its back.

Its flesh is slightly cherry-red and appetizing. It is a very tasty fish with firm elasticity and umami. However, live ones are seldom found in the market. And like Kochi, it is a low-yield fish.
