Characteristics:

Bigeye scad (Me-aji) is distributed in the warm waters of southern Japan and throughout the world. It inhabits coastal waters from shallow to about 170 m deep in schools. Its body length is 20~25 cm. Its back side is blue-green and its belly side is white with a broad yellow longitudinal band in the center of the body. It is slightly smaller than the Horse mackerel (Ma-aji) and Japanese scad (Muro-aji) and is characterized by its large eyes.

Its dark red meat (Chiai) is dark and abundant, so it does not look good when viewed in cross-section in fillets. Rather than being used for sushi topping or sashimi, it is mainly grilled, boiled, or dried. It is also used for fried fish because it has less fat than horse mackerel (Ma-aji) and its flesh is more tender.
