Obtuse barracuda (Daruma kamasu)

Obtuse barracuda (Daruma kamasu) is distributed in the warm seas of the Ryukyu Islands, India, and the western Pacific Ocean. It lives in fairly large groups around coral reefs. It is 40-50cm long. It has two brown bands running down its sides. Its body is silvery in color, and its tail fin is yellow.

Daruma kamasu can be bought in supermarkets in Kyushu and Wakayama Prefecture. It can be prepared and eaten in the same way as ordinary barracuda (kamasu). It is also surprisingly good with oil and is a delicious pan-fried or deep-fried fish. Of course, it is also delicious as nigiri sushi, but it is rarely served in Tokyo.
