Characteristics:

Panther puffer (Higanfugu) is found in reef areas throughout Japan south of Hokkaido, the East China Sea, and the Yellow Sea coasts. Total length is 20~30 cm. The maximum length reaches 35 cm. Its body color is brown with black spots.

The flesh is harmless, but the testes are weakly poisonous, the skin and intestines are poisonous, and the liver and ovaries are highly poisonous. It is known as the second most expensive pufferfish after Japanese pufferfish (Torafugu), but some prefectures have banned the consumption of Higanfugu in some areas. The taste of Higanfugu is said to be as good as that of Torafugu, and since it is relatively inexpensive compared to Torafugu, it is a very popular pufferfish in many areas.
